In the last few years, vaping has become a very popular way to stop smoking in the UK. There are a lot vaping devices to choose from such as vape pens and the more advanced vape kits or e-cigs, Vape’s are far less harmful than traditional cigarettes and can help you to quit smoking for good.
What are e-cigarettes and how do they work?
An e-cigarette is an electronic device that allows you to inhale nicotine in a vapour rather than inhaling smoke.
E-cigarettes do not burn tobacco therefore do not produce tar or carbon monoxide, two of the most damaging elements in smoking tobacco.
Vaping devices work by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine, propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerine, with added flavourings.
In the UK using an e-cigarette is known as vaping.
What type of e-cigarettes can you buy?
There are a variety of models and variations available:
Vape pens are shaped quite like a pen or small tube, with a tank to store the e-liquid, replaceable coils and rechargeable batteries.
Pod systems are compact rechargeable devices, usually shaped like a USB stick, with e-liquid capsules.
Mods come in different shapes and sizes, but are generally the largest, high end e-cigarette devices. They have a refillable tank, longer lasting batteries, and variable power settings
.How do I choose the right e-cigarette for you?
A rechargeable e-cigarette with a refillable tank delivers nicotine much more effectively and quickly than a disposable model and is likely to give you a better chance of quitting smoking.
If you are a lighter smoker, you could try a vape pen or pod system.
If you are a heavier smoker, it is advisable to try a vape pen, pod system or mod.
It is also important to choose the right strength of e-liquid to satisfy your needs.
A vape shop can help find the right device and liquid for you.
Will an e-cigarette help me stop smoking?
Many thousands of people in the UK have already stopped or planning to stop smoking with the help of an e-cigarette. There's growing evidence that they can be more effective than substitutes such as gum or patches.
Using an e-cig can help you to manage your nicotine cravings. To get the best out of it, make sure you are using it as much as you need to and with the right strength of nicotine in your e-liquid.
A UK clinical trial that was published in 2019 found that, when combined with face-to-face support, people who use e-cigarettes to quit smoking were twice as likely to succeed as people who have used other nicotine replacement products, such as patches or gum.
You will not gain the full benefit from vaping unless you stop smoking cigarettes completely. We have seen people trying to do both for example, vaping to cut down but this is rarely successful. You can get advice from a local vape shop or your local stop smoking service which is normally free.
Are e-cigarettes safe?
In the UK, e-cigarettes are highly regulated for safety and quality.
Vaping is not completely risk free (it is still early days), but they carry a small fraction of the risk of smoking cigarettes.
E-cigarettes do not produce any tar or carbon monoxide, two of the most harmful elements in tobacco smoke.
The eliquid and vapour contain some potentially harmful chemicals also found in cigarette smoke, but at far lower levels.
What about risks from nicotine?
While nicotine is the addictive substance in cigarettes, it is relatively harmless.
Almost all the harmful elements from smoking come from the thousands of other chemicals in tobacco smoke, many of which are highly toxic.
Are e-cigarettes safe to use when pregnant?
There has been little research into the safety of e-cigarettes in pregnancy, but it is likely to be much less harmful to a pregnant woman and her baby than smoking cigarettes.
If you are pregnant, licensed products such as patches and gum are the recommended option to help you stop smoking.
But if you find using an e-cigarette helpful for quitting and staying smoke-free, it is much safer for you and your baby than continuing to smoke.
Do vapes pose a fire risk?
There have been instances of e-cigs exploding or catching fire.
As with any rechargeable electrical device, the correct charger should always be used, and the device should not be left charging unattended or overnight.
Is e-cigarette vapour harmful to others?
There has been no evidence so far that vaping causes harm to other people around you.
This contrasts with second-hand smoke from smoking, which is known to be very harmful to both the health and other people around them.
